First Impressions: Domestic Violence and a Child’s Developing Brain

I’d like to share an important video from the California Attorney General’s office on emerging research into the effects of domestic violence on young children. The more we understand about the brain, the more blurred the line becomes between psychological and physical trauma. This should give a whole new meaning to the idea of traumatic brain injury.

For those of us working with substance using clients, we often hear “my childhood was pretty normal”, only to find out later about significant levels of chaos, violence and/or trauma. The unfortunate fact is for many of these clients, that was “pretty normal”. As we begin to fully understand the effects of trauma, we can hopefully learn to remediate and heal those effects.

When you finish the video, I’d appreciate it if you’d take just a few minutes and complete the anonymous online survey of adverse childhood experiences here: https://survey.recnok.com/index.php/563426/lang-en
